Digits and Digital

After reading pages 18-20, in Doug Eyman’s “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric”, it was clear to me that “digital” had multiple meanings. Digital is more modernly known as computer versions of writing, or anything technology based. This piece helped me understand that it was much more than that. Our fingers or “digits” are to be considered digital as well since we use them to create our writing.

Using our Digits or Fingers

According to Angela Haas, we use our fingers to “make sense of the world”. We use them to write into it as well. Everything in a sense is digital. Something to also consider is the bridge that has been created between the way we used to write and the way we write now. Then, I used to write with pen and paper. Now, the more “modern” way of things is to write using a computer. In middle school, all my writing would go into a folder. Now, it gets saved into an imaginary folder or cloud. An imaginary cloud or folder that is supposed to promise that all my work is kept there safe. Until something goes wrong in the saving process and everything that I typed is now gone because my computer couldn’t help me.

There are times that I believe the way we used to write then, is better then the way we write now. I am taking a creative writing class this semester. My professor actually prefers for all our work to either be handwritten or printed. It is only the third week, but last week it was hard. I had to make sure I did my homework on time. Then, I emailed it to my mom in order to get it printed since we don’t have a printer at home. After years of everything being submitted virtually, the rift has changed a bit.
