What Really is Interactive?

After reading, it further made me realize that being interactive is not what I thought it meant. Based off of what Applen is stating, to be truly interactive one must go beyond the exterior of it all. It is more than just pressing and clicking the buttons or links, it means technology responding to the individual’s thoughts and emotions. True interactivity should feel personal and engaging, rather than just a series of mechanical actions. When technology adapts to our unique perspectives and emotions, it creates a deeper and more meaningful connection.

Another key takeaway that I learned from reading was the expansion of modularity within technology. Manovich sees it as information that does not change its identity and continues to posses their independence. This can be a difficult thing to maintain as many things change often. In my opinion, Apple products is an example of technology that is not modular. The iPhone 3GS was not what the iPhone 16 is now.

Although the idea that new media allows for more individuality is something that I agree with, I believe this is because people are more likely to state their opinions online. The anonymity and accessibility of digital platforms encourage self-expression, enabling users to share their unique thoughts and emotions more freely. Additionally, interactive technology can personalize experiences, further enhancing individuality in digital spaces.

Lastly, being an “impassioned observer” is something that I really resonated with. The reason for this is because I find myself observing in silence at environments around me. I find myself discovering my own self-identity or rather, confirming it in larger crowds. There’s something about blending into the background while quietly taking in the world that feels both freeing and deeply personal. In those moments, I feel more connected to my surroundings while still maintaining a sense of individuality.
