Upon diving into this week’s reading ,I’ve come to realize that the concept of new media is not easily defined. It’s a complex interplay of numerous principles. Every action you perform on your digital device is underpinned by intricate mathematical layers. New media necessitates transcoding, a process that finds its application in digital spaces and technology. When technology changes people think it is old media. When that is not true because the evolution of technology is not the definition for new media.

New media

The definition of new media can flexure since no one person dictates when something is old. There is a lot of misinformation about evolving technology. I am a victim of this, thinking fixed machines are old media since offices use email now. Just because it is old does not mean it isn’t still text. We need to pull back the old and new media layers to separate the two. When the world wasn’t digital, it is now. Simply having a little thing like notifications is new media because it did not exist before digital media.

The principles

At its core, new media principles are rooted in data. As we revisit the beginning of this blog, we realize that every action we perform on our digital devices is layered with data. Professor Friend’s demonstration of our blog’s code revealed that the words we see on the screen are actually a manifestation of two to three lines of data. This code is the embodiment of the principle of new media.
