Media has been involved in ways many could not see happening years ago. With the rise of digital ways of communication, it has created new media. New media is the digital ways we communicate that are constantly changing. These newer ways of communication go beyond simple textbook information. We now learn information in a completely new way, as Eyman argued. Before, being literate simply meant being able to read and write printed texts, not that is not the case now. Now, you also have to have digital literacy. You now need to understand and analyze images, videos, and different forms of media. This now creates a new skill for people to gain. It is different from just being able to read and write. People have to become aware and competent with the various digital tools available.
People now get their information through the internet and barely rely on printed books for new information. The media is where people find and gain knowledge. This makes everything more interactive and collaborative, since people can have direct access to another person in a quick message to either clarify or ask questions. This eliminates the hardships of mailing letters, going to a library, and relying on traditional resources to find information. Now, people can have access to information from anywhere with a click of a few buttons. New media is important because it has now reshaped literacy and created opportunities for people to engage with different digital environments by contributing information or simply observing. New media change how people gain knowledge, understand different texts, and communicate.
