The Relevance of Coding

I’ve always believed coding looked like what nerds did in every movie where they hack the code to a max security system. It never crossed my mind that coding is quite literally everywhere right now. Coding may look like a bunch of nothing to the naked eye, but it is important to realize its relevance. The world today is full of digital spaces, and those spaces can not exist without coding. Games, social media, websites, etc. all use code. Coding shapes the way we see digital platforms. Some platforms use codes that change the way things may appear to us. It wants us to see things a specific way and lead us in certain directions. The coding makes it so our interaction affects the platform.

Isabelle Nieves states that coding is more than communication, it influences users. Choices and interactions made from users changes the coding to cater to each individual. Different codes create different platforms, catering to different audiences. It is very complex, it is essentially its own language. It influences our perception of digital spaces and what we choose to do with each interaction. The order of how things are arranged on the platform is set up with coding. How an algorithm may present itself based on our interest is made with coding. Even though the average person probably will not be able to learn how to code, there should be an understanding of it. Being aware of the influence of coding can help strengthen our digital literacy.
