What is New Media?

New media specifically refers to different digital platforms and tools that allow people to share, create, and interact with content. Traditional media like newspapers or television was not interactive as new media is today. Unlike traditional media, which involved more in print media, new media is identified by interactivity. Anyone who engages with social media platforms are not only creators of the content but collaborators as well. The shift from traditional media to new media allows for a more interactive way of communicating with people. The evolution of new media is constantly growing. It is crucially important to understand the foundation of new media because we will be able to have faster accessibility to information that wasn’t able to be done with traditional media.

Traditional Media

In Eyman’s text “New Media” in “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric” he emphasizes and argues that as new media is rapidly evolving. This challenges our understanding of rhetoric, which has long been associated with different written forms of communication. Rhetoric once focused on limited interactions such as print media. However, digital platforms allow for more interactive rhetorical strategies. For example, a blog post can create different forms of text, images, and links to create a quick message. A YouTube video contains audio, and text to engage viewers in a more appealing way than what traditional media could ever do.

Evolution of New Media

Eyman also discusses the advancing nature of rhetoric in the age of new media. As digital technologies grow and are constantly changing, new devices and platforms continue to rise that are always offering new possibilities for how we communicate. Eyman also emphasizes that digital rhetoric is not just about understanding technology. Understanding and grasping the idea about how these technologies are constantly shaping the way we communicate and interact with each other.
