In his book Digital Rhetoric: Theory, Method, Practice, Douglas Eyman explores the idea of “new media” and how it influences communication. He clarifies on pages 51 to 55 that “new media” includes more than just the use of technology; it also refers to how technology transforms our interactions, self-expression, and information comprehension.
Different Interactions on the Effects of New Media
People have various conceptions of new media, which results in “competing interpretations and definitions,” as Eyman notes. Some people consider any digital platform, including websites, online videos, social media, and new media. Others characterize it as interactions. They claim that new media is more engaging than traditional media, such as TV or newspapers because it allows people to actively participate, comment, and create. One factor contributing to the significant transformation of communication brought about by new media is its participatory nature. Digital content is not only one-way. But, users may instantaneously reply, share, and even edit content.
Additionally, Eyman discusses how some academics consider new media to be revolutionary, while others view it as a continuation of traditional media. According to the first group, modern media fundamentally alters the way we think, create groups, and exchange ideas. The second group contends that despite technological advancements, the fundamental ideas behind news sharing, narrative, and information distribution remain the same.
Recognizing the Wide-Ranging Effects of New Media
Eyman argues that to truly comprehend the impact of new media on our lives, we must maintain an open-minded and comprehensive perspective. Due to the rapid evolution of technology, maintaining definitional flexibility helps both users and scholars stay informed of emerging trends. In the end, Eyman believes that new media is an effective tool that not only brings people together but also molds our rhetorical and cultural environments. Therefore it is worthwhile to investigate the potential effects of each new platform on our society.
