In the article ““Old Media, New Media, and Knowledge” by J.D. Applen, the overall message of her article is how complex information is in todays society. Applen strongly urges people to see both sides and engage in the use of old media and new media. Applen states “Ong tells us that people in oral cultures do not learn like people do in written cultures” (page 3). After coming across this statement from Applen, I realized how different it was back then. Applen states “While oral cultures are analytic in that people in them need to work to find words” (page 3). Applen differentiates how oral and written cultures have a significant impact on how we interact with each other. Although Applen expresses the pros between both old media and new media, through technology, she also expresses the cons as well.

Pros of Technology

Applen has different views on old and new media where she sees both the pros and cons. Applen talks about the pros of old media and how it strengthens how we engage with information in today’s world. In old media, there were many advantages in credibility and trust. There seems to be traditional and established formats that people found it easy to follow and relate to. Whereas in new media, the accessibility from various social media platforms makes it easy to quickly find information. Also, there are different forms of communication on the media where people can share similar interests and provide feedback to each other. News that is posted to the media often appears in seconds which brings back to the point of the use of old media to new media and the use of technology in today’s world.

Cons

Old media has many cons compared to new media and the use of technology in today’s world. Old media had limited accessibility compared to how easy we are able to access information now. News back then took a while to be uploaded to the media whereas new media, news is uploaded in seconds. In new media, many people’s lives revolve around the media now. Many people admit that it is a huge distraction and takes away from the social aspect of their lives.
