Text attributes to any form of communication that exists in digital form. It is more complicated and broad than what we think it is. Text has grew tremendously overtime and has created new meanings of communication. When we think of “text”, we think of forms of communication whether that’s through social media, texting, etc. Whether you believe it or not, electronic technology has taken over our lives.

Eyman’s Outlook

In “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric”, Doug Eyman emphasizes that text has a much broader meaning than the way we see it in today’s world. Text is a gadget in which we use to communicate with each other. Many forms of communication convey text as a way to get our message across to our audience. Eyman states “in rhetorical studies, text can be thought of as the container for arguments or persuasive discourse, but that tradition is also usually associated with printed texts (or transcripts of spoken words); for digital rhetoric, we must see text in a far more expansive light” (Eyman). Eyman makes a good point here. Text is more complex and used in many forms of communication. When we are in an argument, we are actively engaging by commenting, shares, reactions, etc.

My Outlook

I never knew “text” had a deeper meaning than what I originally thought it was. Although we know text is a form of communication, we never think of how every way we communicate, there’s always a text behind the message we are conveying. As text continues to grow, our job is to keep up with new technology, the way people communicate and how we interact with each other. There are many positives and negatives when it comes to text. Building connections with people through text can be beneficial and is important when maintaining relationships. However, there can also be negative impacts on text. Distraction, misunderstandings and even bullying. Text plays both negative and positive roles when it comes to communicating, we need to learn how to connect and communicate in a safe way.

Learn the positives and negatives through digital text and how this influences the way we communicate on social media platforms.
