Text and Rhetoric

Before this class I had no idea texts did not mean literal printed text. In today’s world we don’t use printed text as much anymore so the term “text” has a more broad meaning now. Eyman, in his fashion, brings a good starting reference that being Beaugrande and Dressler’s seven specific criteria’s of textuality. But Darwish argues there are only six layers that comprise text.

I have gathered rhetorical features are present in texts. So what is produced on the text is important for its audience but also for rhetoricians to understand?

Now we are just making words up. Really, spime? I have the definition and still am not grasping it. I think it would help if I had an example of a spime. Is it a program, like the internet, that knows what it is and talks about itself? Why do we need this?

Text, and?

Eyman sure knows how to break a person. I have reread the text (lol) so many times and still don’t get it. Not only did my mind just break trying to write any of that but then it broke more after thinking about how digital rhetoric comes into play. Overall I liked Kress’ observations in that texts “result of social action.” It puts into perspective what all of this is for. How important text is. Texts should be used in positive ways. To uplift. Motivate. Inspire.

I already got used to reading one author other than Eyman and I’ve become too comfortable. All of the questions I have will go unanswered and that is okay. I don’t need to know everything and that is okay. One thing I have learned from this is Eyman is one crazy man. How has he not gone insane writing this? All I know is I am going insane reading it.
