Technology relies heavily on code and characteristics of code are also very important. One characteristic of code is how rhetoric fits into it. The rheotric used between computers is calle source code. It’s code language. There is high level language which is more for humans to be able to read to which they then interpret and make it simpler for the computer. Then there is low level language which is easier for the computers to read. Another characteristic includes meta-commentary and code-level comments. Code developers leave little notes and messages for each other in the comments. The comments translate to imbedded code messages left that are only meant for human audiences to understand.
A third characteristic involves the context of code in its historical, social and cultural background. A noticed issue is that code itself is not widely available to all racial and cultural settings. According to McPherson and Risam, it’s a known issue, “McPherson (2012) and Risam (2015) have discussed the problematic relationship between digital technologies, their histories, and the racial makeup of the academic communities that study them, especially in the conglomeration of fields called the “digital humanities” and how it positions inquiry in relation to its objects of study.” ( McPherson 2012, Risam 2015, Kevin Brock 2019). Rhetorical code resembles digital rheotric. It is a specific language used between computers, that can also be modified for human comprehension as well. It’s much more broad and complicated than I previously thought. It’s a digital language that I think people should try to learn at least once to understand a little more about the digital world, and welcome appreciation to those who do know it.
