Social media is such a big part of everyday life that I don’t think we really stop and think about how much it affects us. The reading talks about how websites like Facebook and MySpace use certain designs and templates that basically control how we present ourselves online.

We can choose what pictures we post, what we say, and what information we share. But we don’t really get to control how the website puts everything together. I thought this was interesting because I usually only think about what I’m posting, not how the app is designed. For example, Facebook puts a lot of focus on your profile picture, posts, comments, and what your friends are doing.

This can make people look at themselves based on their relationships and interactions with other people. The reading also made me realize that social media isn’t as neutral as it seems. The way an app is set up can influence what we look at, what we post, and even how we see ourselves.

We might feel like we have complete control over our profiles. But we are still using a platform that has already been designed for us. Overall, I think social media is about more than just posting pictures or statuses.

The design of the apps also affects how we communicate and how other people see us. I never really thought about it that way before. However, after reading this, I can definitely see how much the design matters for it to make sense.
