The Shift from Text-Only Assignments

Reading Doug Eyman’s Digital Rhetoric: Theory, Method, Practice made me think about how much writing and sharing text have changed, especially in my own college experience. One part of the book that stood out to me was John McDaid’s Toward an Ecology of Hypermedia. McDaid talks about how media, like the internet, don’t just carry information, they shape how we understand and experience it. This idea really made me reflect on how my writing has evolved over time.

From Simple Essays to Multimedia Projects

When I first started submitting assignments online for my college courses, it was all about writing essays and research papers. At the time, the assignments were simple: just text on a page, with no extra elements. I’d write, submit, and that was it.

The Rise of Multimedia in My Work

However, over time, I began to notice the expectations for assignments changing. Writing wasn’t the only focus anymore. Now, I find myself adding more than just text. I include images to explain my points better, videos to support my ideas, and links to sources that give more context. This change made me realize how digital writing is shifting. It’s no longer just words,it’s a mix of text, visuals, videos, and links that all work together to make the message stronger.

Text is Now an Interactive Experience

Ultimately, this shift has been eye-opening for me. Writing isn’t just about putting words on a page anymore. My assignments are becoming more interactive and engaging for the reader. Text is no longer just a block of words, it’s an experience that combines different kinds of media to communicate a message. The way we create and understand text is changing, and I’m excited to see where this evolution takes us next!
