Rhetoric of Code

Over the past two semesters I have become quite familier with rhetoric and what it is used for. Do I know anything about coding? No of course not. Do I have a better understanding of code AND rhetoric after this reading? Lets find out with Brock.

The characteristics of code are a bit challenging for me to understand. The part I understanded the most was the third, of course. Is there any application, company, media, etc. that doesn’t have some sort of racial or discrimminatory bias built into it? We need to start from scratch with literally everything.

I would have never thought that rhetoric would have anything to do with code but the quote, “[…] it is imperative that critics of rhetoric and software alike understand how software and its code exert influence upon our efforts to communicate with one another […]” put it into persepctive. The influence that code has on its audience is important for the further development of digital applications.

Code’s Development

This felt like an Eyman chapter the way there was a bunch of refrences from others (woah). I had to reread parts so many times because my brain lost track of what was going on. (random fun fact: as I’m writing this the earthquake just happened lol)

It appears many scholars and rhetoricians are torn on how rhetoric appears or engages with code?… Maybe? I believe that there is rhetoric in code. Similarly to digital rhetoric, it should be applied differently in code in a way that fits with that setting. Just like we should update outdated models we follow that same thing should be applied with code, digital rhetoric, etc.

I’m no master in code and after reading this I have a slight idea of it but even that is barely anything. What I know is that the system or structure of code needs to be reformed to accomodate today’s world. I mentioned in another blog post that all things should be updated as time goes on so why wouldn’t that apply here? I hope to gain more knowledge on coding and hopefully the development of rhetoric as coding continues to prosper.
