Google and the Misinformed Public

When I read “Google and the Misinformed Public” by Safiya Noble, it made me think about how much people depend on the internet. People use Google because it is quick, but not every result is true or fair. Noble explains that search engines can show biased information and spread harmful ideas.

As an Elementary Education major, I think this is important because students use technology for schoolwork from a young age. They may search for answers online without knowing how to tell if a source is trustworthy. As a future teacher, I want my students to understand that they should not believe everything they read online.

I can teach students to check who wrote the information, look at the date, and compare it with other reliable sources. The first Google result is not always the most accurate answer. Students need to ask questions and think carefully about what they find.

This connects to my major because teachers do more than teach reading, writing, and other subjects. We also help students learn how to think for themselves and make good choices. Technology helps in class, but students need guidance.

Overall, Noble’s article reminded me that finding information online takes more than typing a question into Google. As a future elementary school teacher, I want to help students become responsible technology users. Teaching them how to check information can help them learn, stay informed, and avoid spreading information that is not true. I hope to make these skills part of everyday learning.
