Code and Why It’s Important

I agree with Isabelle Nieves’ “Code” that code is a language between humans and technology. It helps dictate how applications and websites behave and how people interact with them. She explains how rhetoric relates to code because code is how people communicate with computers. I agree with this because the way code is written can influence how people use technology and understand information. Social media platforms use it to organize posts, recommend content (algorithms), and determine what features users can access.

The algorithms decide what to show you and when using data collected by the apps you use. When you like one post on a specific topic, you’ll get more content relating to that topic because of the algorithm. The algorithm guides user interactions and keeps audiences on the website/app they’re using to gather information. These decisions influence what people see and how they respond to certain topics. The code reflects the decisions and ideas of people who write and create it. Understanding code can help people become more aware of how technology influences their daily lives and how digital communication works.

Most people just doom scroll on social media without questioning how digital tools actually function. Something that stood out to me were the questions that Nieves chose for critically literate users to ask when using platforms. These questions include why are these spaces designed the way they are and what message are they trying to send us. They really stood out to me because people don’t really sit there and think about the platforms they use daily and just use them because they’re popular and entertaining.
