HCI stands for Human-Computer Interaction which is not to be confused with HSI which stands for Homeland Security Investigations, I say this because at first I was mixing the two up. Although they are close in acronyms they’re very different. HCI relates sociology and human connection in the computer and technical sense. The psychology of humans and computer science. They develop new software keeping this mindset while they do it. Eyman suggests that HCI would be greatly beneficial to digitize rhetoric as they can work hand in hand. This being because they both seek a portion of user empowerment. Eyman even references Thomas Skeen who says, “there is some overlap between the fields of rhetoric and HCI. One parallel is the issue of user empowerment…the HCI also concerns itself with user-sentries empowerment as an ideal.” (Skeen 2009, Eyman 2015).
HCI uses human studies to see how it best works with human interaction. It uses things like sociology, psychology and cognitive science. With this is makes observations on how humans can influence the technology and vice versa. However this is not to assume that they cater only to the human relationship. They are there to design and construct interfaces, software and networks. These networks that they create are usually what then gets introduced and studied. These studies help them create technology that is safer and easier to use for humans. It caters to humans needs like when you get an update on your phone. It creates and does what it needs to do to make the usage of computers and computer science based devices to use.
