Understanding Privacy in Digital Technologies Risks

The article “Understanding and Maintaining your privacy when writing with digital technologies” by Lindsey C. Kim was found quite eye opening. In today’s world, digital platforms are heavily relied upon for communication. Digital tools are made to make it easier for individuals to write and connect with others. As the article goes further into explanation about the terrifying aspects of the topic it becomes very clear. Even though digital tools are made to share ideas among one another and communicate we are unaware of the tradeoffs. Leaving individuals unaware of their digital footprints.

The risk of personal data and privacy being leaked were understood and explained by Kim. One of her points was agreed with: when an app is downloaded, I click on the agree button without reading terms. I believe reading a 76-page agreement is unnecessary. The things we agreed to, such as our exposure of personal data were not fully understood. Some individuals seem to not be bothered by it, while others acknowledge the risk and become very cautious. Then there are those individuals who avoid the internet altogether because of how suspicious it is.

The possibility of our “private thoughts” being exposed is scary. When I say private thoughts, I mean opinions that are usually shared with close individuals only, yet it is being exposed to outsiders. However, many fail to realize what is written on our digital media can have a far greater impact. Anything shared can be exposed to a much wider audience than intended. Kim provided a different perspective on the digital world in this article. It was simply explained in this article that much of what is considered private is, in fact, not stored privately. It makes me rethink to what I just agreed on.
