Can’t I just look it up if I don’t understand?
Is he saying we don’t understand if we don’t know the original writing that is being referred to in a text? I’m not sure. I did have to look up the meaning of intertextuality in the middle of reading these paragraphs because I felt like I wasn’t really understanding the text without knowing the definition. Honestly, I’m still confused about the definition.“Contemporary users of Web- based discourse have at their fingertips resources that enable them to seek out information in the moment in order to more fully understand and appreciate an intertextual reference” (119). This quote is what led me to ask the above questions, I also believe that is the point he’s trying to make. We do have digital resources at our fingertips so it is very easy to look up the meaning of a word or the synopsis of a story before we even start it to better our understanding. That was a lot!
How can I reference something I don’t know?
After our class discussion, I now understand that intertextuality plays a key role in shaping the meaning of texts. It connects them through references, allusions, and echoes of previous works. When writers draw on other texts—whether through direct quotes, paraphrases, or subtle references—they create a network of relationships. This network deepens the reader’s understanding. It allows readers to interpret a text in a more layered way. Readers bring their own knowledge and experiences of referenced works into their interpretation.
Intertextuality expands a text’s meaning. It challenges the idea that a text exists in isolation. By engaging with previous works, writers create a dialogue across time and space. This enriches both old and new texts. The interconnectedness allows for deeper exploration of themes, characters, and ideas. Readers are invited to consider the broader cultural and historical context. In literature, film, and advertising, intertextuality often comments on, critiques, or transforms past narratives. It doesn’t just give new meaning to old texts. It also reshapes the reader’s understanding of both the new and the old. Through intertextuality, writers and creators show us the world as a complex, interconnected web of ideas.
