What comes to mind when we think about the word ” Rhetoric” or the concept behind it? We may often think about the simple definition of rhetoric- the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. Digital Rhetoric, however is “applying traditional rhetorical theories and methods to new media compositions and networked spaces.” Methods, Objects, and theories are the three concepts that make digital rhetoric different. We often see digital rhetoric in fields such as: computer science, gaming, coding and internet research. Rhetoric shares similarities in Digital Rhetoric but are not often the same. The theory behind rhetoric can be applied to many different aspects of life, not just digital rhetoric. Digital Rhetoric, Analog and Digital aspects are very important when discussing technology.

Digital Versus Analog

Between the two terms “digital and analog” and they have very major differences when talking about rhetoric. Normally, we use the word ” digital” relating to any sort of technology. “In technical terms, digital systems are made up of values whereas analog systems feature a continuous range of values, often represented as a wave.” Analog works differently than digital. Analog works on similarity, proportion, and resemblance. It uses a set of signals or information that is continuous. Digital operates on codes, programs and contrast- it is electronic based. If there is one similarity between the two, they are both types of carrying information. Rhetoric, Digital Rhetoric and Analog are not new ideas we recently came about. Between the two words it does not mean they can not be applied to digital rhetoric as well.
