Eyman’s Definition

In the section “Text” of Chapter One, “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric,” of his book, Digital Rhetoric: Theory, Method, Practice, Douglas Eyman goes about defining text in relation to Digital Rhetoric. He begins by acknowledging the common approach, which is to view text as writing (printed text or literary works. Eyman’s definition of text is a combination of various theories that classify text in criteria, layers, and categories. Ultimately, his definition is quite similar to that which he gave Rhetoric. This would make sense, in that the definition he gives text is within the realm of Digital Rhetoric.

Relation to Rhetoric

In this section, Eyman seeks a broader “approach to ‘text’ as a ‘communicative event.’” This relates to Rhetoric because it has to do with purpose and context, which are important factors in the consideration of audience. Like Rhetoric, text is directly connected to “social action and social forces,” which implies that text has “rhetorical features.” Additionally, Eyman emphasizes that text also exists beyond writing. Just as Rhetoric is adaptable to audience, and therefore to medium, text can be found in many different readable features in various modes of expression.

Furthermore, the rhetoric of text calls for some attention to “design” and/or aesthetic. Text, as a rhetorical device, must appeal to the audience in as many ways as possible. The meaning of the text alone is not enough. This is why the context and medium is a vital consideration in the creation of text.

My Thoughts

I think this definition can make for a strong argument against Plato’s belief that written language lacks the characteristic of interaction and adaptability to the audience. According to Eyman’s definition, the main component behind text is to be as influential to the audience as possible. Granted, speech maintains the art of last-minute improvisation, which I don’t think text can do. But to say that text cannot be interacted with or that it does not allow for the exchange of information, would be a mistake.
