From this section, there was a lot to say about new media. Not just from Eyman, but from other sources he references as well. In general, I did not really understand what the details are. I never fully understood Eyman’s words in the way he wants others to understand. But, from what I could understand, the concept of new media involves talking about if the media of new media is always, or only, digital or electronic. Or if it can still be traditional in ways. Further beyond that question comes the topic of what even is new media in general.

P & J

The pair mentioned in the article, Packer and Jordan, make their assessment. Their assessment is that the nature of digital media will always challenge the traditional categories. If this topic was looked at as electronic versus analog or traditional, then yes the new forms and ways of today does challenge tradition. But, I think it is important to keep in mind that the new will almost always be influenced or inspired by the old.

The Traditional Mind

A person mentioned in the article, Anne Wysocki, brings up a point that I found really interesting. They propose that new media texts does not have to be digital, but can be physical and psychological. Wysocki used one of Manovich’s arguments in their discussion, saying that “his arguments portray how a process that can seem unique to digital texts can be more complexly connected to other ways we understand who we are and how we function”(Wysocki, 55).

I find that an interesting way to look at new media texts. Seeing how it can effect the way a person thinks and functions with themselves and the world around them. Identity is such an important concept to a person. It can range from an identity of self and an identity of who they are in their surrounding space. That space could be a physical environment, like a classroom, or a electronic space like a chat room for whatever topic. How a person uses their text or takes in the surrounding texts further influences their thought process and how they would respond in return.
