In the 21st century, some people might define “text” as something you do on a mobile device. This is how people communicate. If I were to ask someone to define “text”, they might have a different answer. According to “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric“, Kress says, it’s “the result of social action”. (87) I think that all can agree that text is a form of communication. Whether that is informational, entertaining, or educational. To me, that’s what “text” is.

When I first think of text, I think of a textbook. Not only because the word is in the name, But in context, it’s a form of communication to spread educational awareness of historical events. The way that the “social action” is brought into it is not to the author. Peers and educators are allowed to come up with their own questions and opinions on a subject. Before textbooks were able to share information, people used to put symbols on walls to give messages. This example shows that there are multiple ways to communicate.

I think any type of text is a way to bring communication from one person to another. Another example I think of is text on social media. The information and the way that the information is presented can bring “social action”. Although texting and posting your thoughts on social media is something that the current generation is used to, I think there could be come down falls with the concept. According to “Impact of Text Messaging On Communication“, “Men and women use face-to-face communication differently, so it would be plausible to say that they would use text messaging differently, as well.” (Mankato, 2009) Something that as destroyed suing communication through text is not being face-to-face. People can misinterpret text all the time.

“Intrinsic Persuasion” on Social Platforms

In the means of “text”, “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric” takes a point of view from Stan Lindsay. He says that websites “persuades each user that it is worthy of use, based on design, usability, and accessibility”. (Stan Lindsay 1998) Digital rhetoric comes into play when viewing something on the web. Visualization on a concept of the web can alter ones opinions. The text that an author of a source decides to use can also make or break the look. This part is crucial to the author because it provides full independent actions of one’s settlement for the text.
