Eyman has ideas on “New Media and Digital Rhetoric” that may give us a different lens to technology, communication, and what a digital space is. New media, by Google’s definition means of mass communication using digital technologies such as the internet. However, New media helps us understand digital spaces and use these spaces to connect and create a different environment a meaning. Giving us the structure, the tools, platforms, and a few features. I mean, if you look at marketing, it is such a huge major that’s expanding over time, and if you take a moment to look at how businesses market social media

Let’s talk business

We think about the intention that is put behind a post on social media. As someone who runs social media for my business, there’s a magic behind it to get people through the door. It’s in knowing what’s trending and allowing yourself to understand algorithms. An example of a post: ” I used the grinch, ‘That’s it, I’m not going.” As a slogan in the summer, it said Hairy and scared to go to the beach? Book a wax, and save yourself the hassle of little stray hairs being left over. We use certain songs, pictures, and videos to create an aesthetic. It’s how we respond to our targeted audience. We have captions, hashtags, and there’s a “certain time” to post.

A preview of your inner world

New media is a preview of your inner world and how you present yourself. How you want to be seen and express yourself. If you are on there posting curse words, negativity, drama, that’s what you’re viewed as. If you share creativity, humor, or empowerment, that’s what you’ll be associated with. It can be viewed from many perspectives, and in those perspectives, you can either see it as a manipulation tactic.

In many ways, new media blur the line of authenticity and performance, revealing who we really are, although it can be constructed through a mask. Depending on your perspective, it’s either a window into the self or a manipulation tactic. To know that digital rhetoric isn’t just about technology, it’s about how we translate the self into the digital world
