After reading the “Digitial Rhetoric, New Media” section presents the unclarity of the term “New Media.” We don’t have to refer to the reading; the original question for synthesis three is enough. “When do particular media stop being ‘new’? This question sparked confusion throughout the class, as well as conversation. Ideas were thrown and shot down. The conversations lead to questions which result in more questions because of the unclear understanding of what is new media?

Professor Friend stated Manovich’s essential characteristics set what is considered New Media. The characteristics being Numerical Representation,
Modularity, Automation, Variability and Transcoding. Although Manovich is the first to touch the subject for considering the Big WHAT! I don’t think it should be the only thing that can identify. Friend mentioned how if he were to provide ehis idea of New media it will backfire because everyone will be backing Manovich’s characteristics. Back to the question we ask ourselves when do media stop being new? And from me asking for clarification on when we would drop the word New from new media had caused its own issue. My next thought was time is how we can differentiate the two, but time was knocked down.

Manovich’s characteristics makes sense but what I’m proposing is a revaluation. We look articles or the News they have “New stories” being updated constantly throughout the day or even daily. And what changes is the time for them to be in archives. People are be to see them still but they wont be a headline anymore. I believe this can go for multiple circumstances. Additionaly if that thing makes history by doing what hasn’t been done before and the attention strays away from that company.
