Since reading “New Media”, in Eyman’s reading that I am so extremely familiar with, it had become an understanding that new media has numerous definitions. To Cynthia Selfe is defined as text that have been created in a digital environment. The reading also emphasizes that there are numerous things that tie into new media. Those things are shapes, sounds, colors, graphics, spaces, texts and so much more. There are even five basic principles that create new media texts and those five actually differ if you ask Manovich or Packer and Jordan. Therefore “new media”, isn’t just text that has been created in a digital environment. It is so much more.

In my opinion, new media can be considered as movies, videos, social media posts, pictures etc. It is not just limited to texts that are digital. I would also consider ebooks and Kindles as forms of new media. Digital versions of literally everything are being created everyday. I also believe that’s why when applying to colleges and jobs many people say “watch out for your digital footprint”. Quite frankly, it is simple to do a Google search and things that you swore were deleted, are back. It is extremely important to think before you post, as nothing is ever really deleted off the internet.

It doesn’t need to be digital!

In the sense, modern media has a different definition amongst who you ask. And regardless of the definition someone chooses to take, it is still subject to rhetorical theory and principle. I believe that regarding this specific media, things don’t even have to be digital in any form. There are art pieces and physical things that could capture the essence of this form of new media. With how modern and technological things are getting, we tend to think that everything needs to be online for it to be considered new media. It doesn’t, as there are still modernized traditional ways to create new media.
