A girl thinking before she posts.

Going Public in an Age of Digital Anxiety

Reading “Going Public in an Age of Digital Anxiety: How Students Negotiate the Topoi of Online Writing Environments” made me think differently about how much we put online without really thinking about it. Social media and other online spaces are a big part of everyday life for students. Because of this, writing something online can feel different from writing something just for yourself or for a teacher.

What stood out to me was the idea that students have to think about their audience when they write online. You never really know who might see something you post. Something that seems normal to you could be understood differently by another person. I can relate to this because I sometimes think twice before posting something, especially when I know other people are going to see it. There is always a feeling of wondering how people will react or judge what you said.

I also liked how the reading showed that online writing can give students a chance to express themselves and have their voices heard. At the same time, there can be pressure because once something is online, it can be difficult to take it back.

Overall, this reading made me realize that online writing comes with more responsibility than I usually think about. I felt like the topic was realistic because digital anxiety is something many students can understand. It made me think more carefully about what I share and who might be reading it before I decide what to share.
