New media is old media transformed into the world of multimedia. Therefore it is because it introduces new media with computer based aspects. This could be forms like video, audio and movies. What makes it new is how it takes the concepts of older media and reshapes it into a modern translation. This idea is presented by Richard Grusin and Jay Bolter, “What is new about new media comes from the particular ways in which they refashion older media and the ways in which they refashion older media and the ways in which older media refashion themselves to answer the challenges of new media.” (Grusin, Bolter,Eyman 2015).

Lev Manovich would also say, “ new media objects are cultural objects; thus any new media object…can be said to represent…some outside referent.”(Manovich, Eyman 2015). This meant he believed that all new media had a historical background tied to old media. Furthermore he states that what separates old and new media is mostly that new media is “computer-accessible numerical data.” (Manovich, Eyman 2015).However there are some key points when trying to understand new media. Numerical representation, modularity, Automation, Variability, and transcoding. Manovich sees them as a “methodological framework” for new media. Numerical is the digital coding. Modularity is pieces of a puzzle that don’t lose their individuality when making the bigger picture. Therefore these lead to automation which is possible because of the first two concepts, numerical and modularity. Variability is having different versions of the same thing and transcoding is “the cultural layer adn the computer layer” (Manovich, Eyman 2015).
