This week’s reading focused on digital safety and privacy online. maintaining privacy online. In Lindsey C. Kim’s article, she explained that “an undisturbed environment and privacy promote better writing and the writing process.” I tested this claim in my ENG 2020 class through a process paper. We explored our writing habits and the environments that support them. I learned that I can write in most places as long as I have music to help me focus. Others, however, prefer complete quiet and solitude.
The Connection Between Reading and Privacy
There is also a connection between reading and digital safety and online privacy. Online privacy is complicated because personal information is constantly collected and used to build algorithms. These algorithms shape what we see and encourage us to click without even realizing it. When we engage with certain websites and apps, we allow outside companies access to our data. For this reason, classes and educational conferences should teach students how to protect their information while online. Schools and other educational settings would benefit most from this type of instruction.
Why Internet Safety Education Matters
As the world becomes more digital, learning how to use the internet safely is crucial for everyone. Teaching people how to stop their data from being easily traced and how algorithms influence shopping habits would be effective ways to build awareness of digital safety and privacy online.
Practical Tips for Safer Use
One example is checking privacy settings on social media instead of simply accepting defaults. Another example is reading what cookies do on websites before clicking “agree” to the terms of service. When people combine technical skills with critical thinking, they use the internet more responsibly and with confidence. Understanding digital safety and privacy online allows individuals to protect themselves while still benefiting from technology.
