Privacy Online

I never considered there were ways to gain control over your internet privacy. I knew there were limitations and ways companies control what little freedom they give us, but I never knew there were ways around that. Lindsey C. Kim does a great job of explaining how to gain more control of our privacy online. If you know what to look for you can hold more power over what you do. Not just what data is being gathered, but how it is used and whom it is shared with. Before finishing this reading I had absolutely no idea there was a way to outsmart the data. I knew that companies always want to know more about us to keep us interested in their products but I had no idea it was possible to look up the information on data collection. I knew very little on how to have privacy on the internet.

Learning

Speaking of not really knowing how data works, I never realized how predictable learning became. Martha Fay Burtis talks about how learning has become streamlined and predictable. I learned just last semester that the five-paragraph essay design was made just to make things easier for the teachers. Students are taught in a way that fits certain molds so it is easier to pick things out. This leads to similar results no matter the student. For example, every student will have a conclusion that summarizes the whole text.

The more I listened to the podcast the more I realized how strange the internet makes the world. Martha Fay Burtis talked about students expecting the work to be online. If they don’t see the work online, the students think they don’t have to do it. One of my classes this semester didn’t have anything posted on Canvas whatsoever and I freaked out. Mostly because when I didn’t see the class on Canvas I thought I didn’t actually sign up for the class. However I then wondered how will I know how much work the class is. While my fundamental years of learning were without technology, I still came to expect all my work to be online.
