Before the iPod, technology was full of buttons you had to click on, each with its own role.
However, Apple decided to design a new type of mobile device, the iPod Touch. Instead of endless clicks on buttons and a small screen to use, it came up with something you could swipe and glide your finger on. This makes the user more in tune with the experience they are able to be part of. This was a process, as the iPod and the user both had to learn to use each other to take full advantage of it.
Inside the iPod were lots of hidden rules. Users did not realize many things in their new phones that they could not decide on. Instead, the iPod only has control over some of the decisions. One of which was the fact that it had only apps it controlled. It chose the design of the icons, or what noise the alarm had to make. The code of the device dictated this, to which people who bought the device had to abide by.
The iPod’s Impact Today
As of now, the iPod has shaped how we see the world, even today. With the iPod, people were able to carry their music with them everywhere. Not just as some bulky boombox, but rather, a small device that fits perfectly in your pocket. People were able to curate their own playlists and easily share their music tastes with others by carrying an extra set of headphones. Overall, the popularity of the iPod brought forth two major revelations. One being that music is part of everyday life and screens are meant to be a part of everyday life.
After all, as a young adult in 2026, I cannot imagine my life without either. Especially because of the cellphone I carry in my pocket 24/7 ever since middle school.
