Digital Literacy is more than technology. It’s a term that can be hard to define. To me, it’s not just about using tools like smartphones and computers but about navigating, evaluating and creating information with digital technologies. It’s about understanding how these lovely tools shape communication and information around our world.
It is easy to think of digital skills as just knowing how to operate with your phone and social media. But it’s more about critical thinking and evaluating sources. For example, my father isn’t familiar with the internet, so I often have to help him figure out if an ad or post is trustworthy. I believe my generation is more accustomed to this, but for older generations, it’s a struggle. I believe digital literacy is not quite just about tools but an individual’s mindset if that makes sense? It’s about understanding your digital footprint and engaging with technology in an ethical way.
According To Eyman even though he wasn’t very specific to his definition of digital literacy. The way I interpreted was him describing it’s more important knowing rather than using the tools if that makes sense? Being able to read and write with a number of sign symptoms, coded webs, videos, audios and much more. I think of it this way: digital is using different devices or applications. Being able to effectively do online research like knowing the difference between credible sources and unreliable ones according to Blanco. So the example I had given earlier of my father asking me to be a judge to ensure the formation is accurate. One of the skills of digital literacy is used critical thinking. I also believe communication is very heavily related to digital literacy. Communication in digital platforms such as email, social media and messaging apps like whatsapp etc.
I’m very biased when it comes to the digital world. Part of me loves it because it can really help benefit different aspects of my life such as my academics. But I am also on the other side of not liking it because not everyone has the skill. They may not even have the opportunity to learn the basic understanding of digital tools. Many employers look for individuals who can adapt to new technology rapidly but also have the understanding of these tools and how to use them. The reason why the other side of me doesn’t like it is because not many individuals get the opportunity to learn or be able to afford a technology system.
