Beyond the Screen: Digital Literacy

Adapting to the Digital Landscape

Eyman and his discussion on digital literacy calls attention to the complexities of when people navigate today’s technology and its landscape. The term literacy used in this context goes beyond basic computer skills people tend to think of automatically when they hear the phrase “digital literacy,” and does require a prerequisite of understanding social, cultural, and rhetorical dimensions when engaging online. The phrase “Digital Literacy” does not only go on about operating digital tools effectively, but it also goes on about recognizing the broader implications and their uses when communicating and learning. This kind of perspective helps to frame literacy in a way that people can use it as a practice to learn, to build critical awareness, and to improve how they engage with texts, technologies, and communities.

A New Perspective on Literacy Awareness

The main theme of Eyman’s take on digital literacy I found would have to be adaptability. As time goes on, technology only becomes more and more evolved. So, I found that Eyman emphasized the importance of learning and adjusting to all the new changes that come with technology, and spoke about how it is essential. A person who is digitally aware should be able to recognize when and how information is created, how that same information then is distributed, and then how that information is being consumed.

But, a digitally aware person should also consider what the power structures are behind each process. Having such awareness discloses how a digital platform could influence a person’s identity, their relationships, and their opportunities. By pursuing literacy with great intention, people are able to position themselves for better ways of communicating, building and bettering their critical thinking skills, and becoming more thoughtful citizens in a world that continues to increase its digital interactions.
