After reading the Digital Rhetoric section in Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric, certain perspectives stood out to me. However, my understanding of rhetoric still comes from our last class. Honestly, whenever I hear the word “rhetoric,” I struggle to define it, lol. In class, we covered a basic definition and discussed how to apply it strategically. I see it as first understanding rhetoric, then figuring out how to use it for persuasion and effective communication.
Eyman argues that computers serve not only as logical tools but also as rhetorical devices. Digital technologies don’t just process information—they actively shape persuasion, discourse, and meaning-making. Rather than acting as neutral computational instruments, they influence how we communicate and interact. To understand digital production and its impact on digital communication, we must recognize the rhetorical nature of digital texts, interfaces, and interactions.
Beyond individual interactions, Eyman explores how digital technology impacts society, culture, and power dynamics. Platforms, algorithms, and online systems control what information we see, shaping public perception and reinforcing certain narratives. He highlights key issues such as digital literacy, online misinformation, intellectual property, and accessibility. These concerns reveal the ethical dimensions of digital rhetoric and the larger role of communication in the digital age. Digital rhetoric also plays a role in how we engage with technology daily. Social media, websites, and even AI-driven tools use persuasive techniques to grab our attention and influence our decisions. Whether through targeted ads, suggested content, or platform design, digital spaces constantly communicate messages that shape behavior, demonstrating the power of digital communication.
We must question technological biases and work toward more equitable and inclusive communication. Understanding digital rhetoric helps us become more aware of these influences, allowing us to navigate and contribute to digital spaces more effectively which will build more of our literacy and become fluent.
