The article, “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric” (pp.12-60) in the University of Michigan Press, discusses the definition of digital rhetoric and its application to online communication.  The term “digital rhetoric” describes how people effectively interact in digital environments, such as blogs, websites, and social media, by using language and symbols. It’s about realizing how messages are establish by the media we use to convey them in text, photos, or videos and how those media might affect or persuade people. For instance, how a business markets a new product. To get people’s attention quickly on Instagram, they might publish a stunning image or video with little to no text, and on their blog, they could write a detailed piece outlining the features and advantages of the product. Adding something catchy whether that’s with the images or text can draw the reader’s attention. To effectively persuade the audience, an approach is necessary.

What is Intertextuality?

According to Eyman, “intertextuality” emphasizes the connections between texts in the world of technology. Texts that regularly cite or expand more than other texts are intertextually rich and has meaning. This relationship is significant to digital communication because it shows how online content influences and is influenced by other content. A post that is created from a well-known cartoon can influence readers’ interpretation of the blog post. According to Eyman, understanding how these “connections between texts produce an elaborate web of meaning in the digital world, is essential to understanding digital rhetoric as a whole.” We need a balance of the traditional and the modern. Implementing these two things daily. The only reason why we have the current materials that we have now is because of the past. The past needed to exist so that we could expand and grow. Especially, now that the world has been shifting toward digital.
