History In Literature

The way that language was aged can be shown by as early as stones on a wall. from symbols to words in a dictionary, to pages in a book. Applen from “Old Media, New Media, and Knowledge“, makes it apparent that history is shown through literature. From the text, “When one goes into a library and walks around the stacks, it is easy to see the ages of history represented spatially: “we form a picture of time past as a growing deposit of sediment; we capture a sense of its depth and dimensionality” (Birkerts 129).” Applen then goes into explaining that

Then and Now

Throughout time in literature, history is shown on how text is altering the thoughts of those who are reading. Today when people read, there are pictures added into books. The information is supported by pictures so the readers can understand the full story. Back in the day before digital media, people had to interoperate their own thoughts. Through this, the information that was in books especially in libraries were not supported by images.

Libraries are prime examples of knowledge and the age of text. When people were interested in looking up something, they were not influenced by anything that would distract them from getting the information they needed. In today’s age, the search bar is a dangerous example of gathering information. People are more likely to get distracted by other suggested items, or other figures on the screen.

A place that holds a lot of pages pressed together with words on them also gives a sign of history. Libraries gives a sense of how things were made into stories or educational information. The hand inked words that were put on paper is only one of the starting points about explaining important times in history. For example, people used to educate and communicate with symbols on a wall. Archives from history can open peoples eyes on how context was given out.

How Did We Get Here?

Individuals had to figure out a way to give out information to the public. This was before today’s society had mobile devices to access information. An article from “7 Ways the Printing Press Changed the World” from History explains how print was brought about through the decades. From the text, “wrote in 1620 that the three inventions that forever changed the world were gunpowder the nautical compass and the printing press.” (Bacon, 2024) This example can prove that there were different ways of gathering information on paper.
