Media’s Message

This article was very interesting to read, as it made me think of many things. A message is defined as the change of pace or pattern that is introduced into human affairs. The concept of the cell phone is a great example of the idea of this word. Giving someone your phone number gives them the message that you’re available at all times. Phones can definitely be a distraction to the world around us.

The example provided at the end of the article is about the idea of online courses. The idea presented here is to imagine the effect online teaching has on our culture. This makes me think about the online classes that we had during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning during the pandemic changed the way of teaching, making things more difficult. After going through an entire semester online due to the pandemic, it made me realize a lot. I realized that online classes are not for me, as this changes my perception of learning.  As a visual learner, being in the classroom setting is more effective for learning and understanding information.

Platforms

I always associated the word platforms with many options of social media. There are so many different social media platforms that are used daily. Redlining is a term that is quickly introduced in the beginning of the article, referring to segregation. I have never heard of redlining being placed in the digital word, as this was something interesting to read about. Digital redlining is defined as “the process by which so much of that quality information is locked by paywalls that prevent students (and learners of all kinds) from accessing that information”.

The idea of digital redlining is displayed using social media, and how it Is controlled. For example, Facebook has many different rules and regulations that are redlined for sure. Profile pictures are presented in circle frames, and friend requests are limited. This app comes with a lot of control, that I have never thought about as redlining. Another aspect of control with Facebook is the language and opinions allowed. You’re not able to fully express the way you feel through posts, as it can result in being thrown in “Facebook jail”. This takes away the ability to post and comments on posts for a full thirty days.
