Understanding and Maintaining Your Privacy When Writing with Digital Technologies

While reading “Understanding and maintainging Your Privacy When Writing With Digital Technologies,” something that had caught my attention. The sentence: “…But what troubled Pariser most was the fact that he never realized it was happening until it was too late. Data was being used in a way he never consented to, one that actively went against his goals and values.” This struck a cord with me. The fact that people’s data is being used against them in todays world is troubling. I’ve always thought that the data we use when we enter websites is being used against us.

In this case, Eli Pariser’s data was being used to delete all his more conservative friends away from his feed. Similarly, it’s like how the writing that we put into big tech companies like Google or Microsoft. The compainies then put what we write into AI to study the patterns. This is in order to train AI into sounding more human. I hadn’t known that was happening until I saw a story about it on my social media.

A lot of times our stuff that is meant for our eyes only tends to be used for something else. The fact that my writing could be used to feed some AI data center is something I don’t want. This leaves me with one other question: Is our private data actually private? I mean I know that’s what the settings say on websites and stuff like that. But the fact that multiple platforms have access to all that we have is a little weird. In fact, I believe that it leaves room for some suspicion.

Messy & Chaotic Learning: A Domains Presentation at Keene State College

I honestly agree with what the author said in the beginning of the text, with how being able to traverse the web and code is something of a life skill that many of us should acquire. I feel as the world grows older, we are forgetting things that we should know how to do. Take for instance learning cursive; I remember when they were teaching it in elementary school but then stopped for a random reason. Now most Gen Z cannot read cursive or have their own signatures because they don’t know how to write in that way. The same can be said about this instance here. Being able to build your own website as well as having a digital Identity are skills that I believe people should have in order to get around in life.
