A white wall with the sentence "The algorithm is gonna get you" that shows the effect of digital rhetoric.

The Power of Digital Rhetoric

Reading Doug Eyman’s section on digital rhetoric in “Defining and Locating Digital Rhetoric” helped me see that rhetoric in this digital age is not just about moving writings from paper to the web. It includes tweets, memes, TikTok videos and website designs. It’s about how persuasion, identity, and communication shift because of the unique features of digital media. I understood digital rhetoric to be the way we use words, images, and sounds to influence how people think and act online.

Digital Rhetoric Through My Eyes

I can see this most clearly in social movements. Like the Black Lives Matter hashtag, it became more than a slogan. It sparked conversations, emotions, and became a call to action across all social media platforms. Which ties into Eyman’s point that digital texts are dynamic and circulate differently than print.

Everyday companies use website design as a rhetorical tool. Airline website design the booking button in a bright bold color while the refund policies is hidden in small print. The design choices persuades me to hurry up and buy a ticket without getting all the necessary details I need. Which Eyman emphasizes as the specific features and limitations like those on the airline website are built into digital platforms to actively influence the consumer.

Digital rhetoric plays a role even with simple things like posting on Instagram. When posting you make all these choices like what caption, hashtags, or filters to use. These choices create a specific image of yourself that is totally in your control. Additionally, digital tools like those give more control over how you are perceived and to whom.

Digital Rhetoric is Everywhere

Eyman made me realize that understanding digital rhetoric is essential for being an ethical and effective communicator today. I’m not just consuming texts online; I’m shaping them through comments, shares, likes, and my own posts. The power of rhetoric is woven into everything online. The more awareness I gain the more I pause to think about what I’m putting out there and what information I’m helping to spread.
